Student Expectations
- You are expected to attend class on time and be prepared to contribute towards discussion and learning activities.
- If you miss class, it is your responsibility to inform your instructor prior to the class session and to collect the course material that you may have missed.
Research, Ethics, and Academic Integrity
- Adherence to acceptable standards of academic honesty is an important aspect of the learning process at King Abdulaziz University. Academic work submitted by students is evaluated on the assumption that the work presented by the student is his or her own. Students who commit acts of academic dishonesty, also known as cheating, will be subject to disciplinary action.
- Plagiarism, whether done deliberately or accidentally, is defined as presenting someone else's work, in whole or in part, as one's own. It includes the verbal or written submission of another work without crediting that source. Plagiarism constitutes an act of academic dishonesty.
Assignment, Test, and Exam Procedures
- Assignments refer to any instrument submitted for marks included in the course evaluation. These include, but are not limited to assignments, projects, reports, take home tests, case studies or essays, and can be in-class or out of class.
- Assignments should be submitted online through our Blackboard course, but may be submitted in hard or soft copy at the discretion of the Professor. Paper or email copies will NOT be accepted. Late homework will generally not be accepted. Homework counts as part of each student's term average, with missed assignments producing zeros that become part of the term average.
- Late assignments, whether individual or team, will not be accepted for grading, except in a case of a documented emergency or special circumstance. Special circumstances are subject to the approval of the professor.
- The primary purpose of homework is to help you master the concepts presented in the course. I encourage you to work on homework in groups and to help each other understand the material within the scope of the “Academic Responsibility”. However, the less you rely on a study group to complete your assignments, the more effectively you are likely to learn the material.
- Homework must be submitted by the indicated deadline. Place your name, the course number, the homework number, and the page number at the top of each page. The homework must be in PDF format. Where appropriate, clearly mark your answers by enclosing them in boxes. Lack of compliance with one or more of these requirements could result in a grade penalty. Sloppy or unreadable homework is unacceptable and could result in a grad e of zero.
- A 20% grade penalty will be imposed for homework submitted up to 6 hours after the deadline or a 50% penalty 6-48 hours after the deadline, and no credit will be given thereafter. No homework will be accepted, regardless of when it is submitted, after the solutions have been posted; this supersedes the 6 and 48 hour partial credit allowances.
- Exams can't be made up. Any severe illnesses or medical emergencies require an official note within 48 hours of missing the exam or forfeit the points. A make-up exam may not be offered (instructor's discretion) even for an excused absence; instead, a grade for the missed exam may be simulated using the relevant parts of the final exam and/or other common exams.
- Students who miss a common exam will receive a score of zero for that exam unless they present a valid excuse within 48 hours of the exam. Students who miss two or more common exams automatically fail the course.
- There are no make-up exams in-class Quizzes, Assignments, Tutorials and Electronic Tests. Students missing an in-class work or electronic tests receive a grade of zero for that quiz. The quizzes are intended to assess students' study habits on new concepts and to help them stay in step with the flow of the course. A make-up exam gives those students taking it an unfair advantage since it will give them extra time to study.
- In order to qualify for a make-up final exam, a student should have met all the course requirements with at least a C average for the part of the semester's work that is complete. Requests to take a final exam at a time other than the one assigned by the Deanship of Registration result from rare situations.
Attendance
According to KAU rules, students who are absent 25% of the contact hours required for a certain course are given a grade of DN (Denial), and are denied the right to take the final exam for that course.
